Sexuality and Feminism

I had a brilliant dinner with my friends last night including the beautiful Miss Erotica 2011 Audrey Tan, the first Asian who won this title.

We were talking about how in New Zealand it is completely acceptable to be a stripper, a dancer, a Miss Erotica, and in other countries, particularly in Asia, this could be too shocking and completely not acceptable.

I have always been very liberal about sex and sexuality. Being liberal about sex and sexuality does not mean sleeping around. Being liberal means you are open to the view on sex and sexuality.

I remembered the first burlesque show I did in 2010 for my friend’s 50th birthday. No idea what made me think it was an awesome idea and what made me brave enough to accept the invitation to do. The experience was a head rush for me. It was meant to be a private function but strangers were walking in and out of bar. And bartenders who became super friendly.

The adrenaline rush is amazing. The confidence you get is amazing. The attention is certainly amazing.

It takes a very confident person to be dancing around semi-naked.

I wouldn’t call myself a feminist, though I share views of this “Third-Wave feminism“. Sex and sexuality should be celebrated, and I hold the strong beliefs that if women chooses to flaunt it, they should be celebrated and supported, not being attacked by fellow women.

Sex, sexuality and even pornography is unique to humans. i remember the lecture notes on the Human Sexuality class I did at Uni very well. Humans are one of the very few species that can have sex for purely recreational and bonding reasons, and not procreation reasons. Humans have also had the abilities to have variations with their sex positions, through taken advantages of our bipedalism. homosexuality, regardless of whether it is nature or nurture, involves sex and sexuality. And yet this could have little biological advantages to the species.

Certainly oral sex have very little biological advantages. (Irrespective on ‘research‘ that claims women who perform fellatio and swallow semen regularly may have reduced risk of breast cancer...)

Sex and sexuality is a way to enhance the bonding between two people, and often you will hear that people say that their relationship is breaking down because their sex life is not working. You read articles in women magazines on how to make love with their men.

Putting stereotypical labels on women in the adult entertainment industry or women who “have it flaunt it” is sad. It is that old Victorian idea that women are too sexy and would cause arousal and you need to cover yourself up. Blame the women for being gorgeous huh?

If men can’t control themselves because it is natural for men to be an animal and think about sex every 10 seconds or something, shouldn’t they be the one under control, perhaps?

I am a lady who enjoy having quality amazing sex with the one I love. And I am proud of it.

Christmas 2011 Reflections

December 25th Christmas Day: On this joyful day it is also a day about love. I’ve spent my whole year finding that true love [心] between you and I. I’ve found that I already have the love of Him, community, clients, boss, colleagues, family and friend. The love I have is more intense and more important. The love I have between me and you will be here one day.

Reflection on 2011 – Romance

2011 continues to be my adventure on finding love. Finding that somebody who I can spend the rest of my life with.

As I am doing my documentary about my quest for love, I had a moment to reflect on 2011, on relationships.

I have been to a record number of dates this year. I was determine to give myself an opportunity to meet as many people as possible and be open with the people that comes into my life.

I have been out on dates with 3 Chinese men, 2 Kiwi men, and casual flings. All in the short period of time and all cramped into my every busy schedule.

I had a great time, but looking back, I am guttedd that nothing leads to anythning longer term. Nothing that happened in the last year led me to finding the right person whom I can spend my time with, even though I am now prepared to give up my work-addictions to be with the person I love.

I am also still seeking answers to whether or not ethnicity comes into play. I always wonder why I am not attracted to a Chinese man. Surely they are culturally going to be a match, right?

Or is it my lifestyle that won’t support it? i have always worked in mainstream organisations and have always acted more Kiwis than I am as Asian. Perhaps I don’t act like an Asian that caused me the problem.

What does Kiwi men think about me though? That I am very Chinese and that I am just a China doll who will never settle down as I am too in love with work?

I keep meeting men who frustrates me either because they don’t understand what I think, or that they are not interested with having a stable relationship.

I have met someone who is charming, gorgeous, understand where I came from, and have great sex. Nah, doesn’t work. He doesn’t want a serious relationship now.

And then there is someone who wants a serious relationship but I have much difficulties trying to communicate with him.

And then I keep fallng into the same cycle over and over again. Why is it so difficult?

Reflections for 2012 – move on, expand my circle to people whom I don’t have any connections with, and see if thi could work better.

2012, or the Year of Dragon is supposed to bring me more luck than 2011. Or so I hope.

God bless.

Race Relations Day 2011

Do you know that March 21 is Race Relations Day? This is a day to reflect on our journey as a culturally diverse nation.

Each year 21 March is observed around the globe as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The date recalls the tragic loss of life at Sharpeville in South Africa in 1960, and is dedicated by the United Nations to the achievement of the goals of the Convention for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. New Zealand signed the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination on 25 October 1966 and ratified it on 22 November 1972.

Over 200 ethnic groups are currently residing in Auckland. Almost 20% of them are Asians, around 15% are from the Pacific. Unfortunately, Asians continued to be viewed as the group most discriminated against, and have been rising since 2008 (74% to 77%). The Christchurch Report-It website continued to received complaints from international students about racial harassment. And in 2010, more than 500 complaints and enquiries made to the Human Rights Commission were about racial discrimination. (see annual review of Race Relations in 2010)

Perhaps it is time for New Zealanders and Aucklanders to reflect on racial discrimination today on the Race Relations Day. Why are we continuely discriminating those who look, speak or act differently? Are they really stealing Kiwis’ job because no Kiwis are actually able to do those work in the first place? Are they really taking all the resources from Kiwis when they are not able to receive any benefits or even student loan in the first two years of arrival.

Reflect, review and embrace cultural diversity.

The Korean Day 2011

The Korean community of Auckland have put on another wonderful day at the North Shore Event Centre on Saturyda, 19th March 2011. The are currently 20,000 – 30,000 Koreans living in New Zealand and 70% lives in Auckland. The Korean Society of Auckladn Inc came together to raise funds for the Christchurch earthquake and were working together as one to enjoy what the community have done for Auckland.

It is wonderful to see the number of youngsters and the elderly participated in the performances. It is lovely to see how to temple organised the tea ceremony to raise funds for Christchurch. It is also lovely to see how the Korean community is working together despite how worn out everyone is to support those in Christchurch.

It was great to be there at the event. A number of the EPAP members attended the event, with a number of VIPs such as the Minister of Ethnic Affairs, Mayor Len Brown, Consuls from Japan, Panama and the Philippines, Ambassador from Korea and reprsentatives from Busan city, community leaders.

As Len Brown said, it is wonderful to see the young people participated yesterday’s community event. They are the future, and no matter what happened, we should be looking at what we can do for the young ones, for the future, and not look back at what happened and who we should blame.

If you have missed the event yesterday – don’t worry! I am sure it will be here at the North Shore Event Centre again next year. See you next year then!
