You Are the Apples of My Eye (那些年，我們一起追的女孩) is a story based on the Director’s childhood memory and his book. A very popular Taiwanese movie in East Asia. The song itself, 「那些年」, have won numerous awards in Hong Kong’s recent music award shows, beating another favourite 「那誰」by a very minor difference.

A very simple story about a boy falling in love with a girl. Things that seems very childish now. What boy still ‘shows strength’ to the girl by getting himself all injured, and do all sort of silly things just to get the attention of a girl?

Perhaps it is about how much more complex our lives have become as we get older. We think about whether that person can support you, can love you, and fear of rejections. I remember the high school days where if you have a crush on someone, you just love that person. You do things to get his/her attention and all you ever dream/fantasize about is whether you will become a couple and wat would that feels like.

The story and the song works because it is simple. Unlike 「那誰」, a song about forgiving and forgetting, this is about remember those childhood memories, the puppy love, and the innocence we once had. When in our lives have we lost that naivety and innocence? When did we begin to think about everything before we decide to be with someone. When did we begin to be so cautious?

Find our inner child, and think about the time when we don’t care and just love for love. We help for the sake of helping. The world could be a better place.
